Collision at South Brent petrol station

A driver was freed by firefighters after a collision on a service station forecourt in South Brent.

Firefighters from Buckfastleigh, Ivybridge and Modbury used hydraulic rescue equipment after the silver Ford Fiesta left the A38 carriageway and ploughed into a wall and a fence on the forecourt of the Carew Filling Station at 12.40am.

Fuel pumps were closed off as a precaution.

The driver, thought to be from Plymouth, was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital with facial injuries.

Man trapped after crash at A38 petrol station

A driver had to be cut free from his car after  crash at a service station on the A38 early on Sunday morning.

Three fire crews were sent to the South Carew petrol station at South Brent at 12.40am.

A driver was trapped in his car after colliding with a fence and a wall on the petrol station forecourt.

Crews from Ivybridge, Modbury and Buckfastleigh were mobilised, and the man was cut free using hydraulic equipment.

Last weekend a man died at the service station after a collision involving a car and a pedestrian.

Several weeks ago a woman driver ploughed her car into the service station shop.

Later this morning there was a four-car crash on the A38 at Bittaford.

Crews from Ivybridge and Buckfastleigh were sent at 1.30am to help clear debris from the carriageway and make the scene safe.

South Brent tree charity seeks volunteers

Moor Trees is a woodland restoration and conservation volunteering charity. Each year, they work with hundreds of volunteers of all ages and abilities to plant thousands of local provenance trees grown from locally collected seed in their community tree nurseries.

Tuesday 8th December: Nursery work at Broadley Tree Nursery (Totnes) from 12.30pm to 4pm. Contact Bea on 07855 973726 or bea@moortrees.org for directions meeting times and 12.10pm South Brent pick-up.

Wednesday 9th December: Site take-down and completion at Burlands (South Brent) from 1pm to 4.30pm followed by nursery work at Dartington tree nursery.

Sunday 13th December: Nursery work at Dartington tree nursery from 11am to 4pm.

Events | Devon Rural Skills Trust hedge steeping course

Devon Rural Skills Trust. are holding a hedge steeping (Laying) course on 5th December at Cheston Equestrian Centre, Wrangaton Near South Brent. The instructor is Sandy Backus Tel 01647 277230.

Courses run from 9.30am to 4.30pm, wear outdoor clothes and sturdy footwear and bring packed lunch. Course fees for DRST members £15 per day, non members £25 per day.  Enquiries and booking contact Mick Godfrey on 01548 821156.

Successive crashes at A38 blackspot cause mile-long tailbacks

Two road accidents within minutes of each other caused major hold-ups yesterday near the scene of a fatal crash just days before on the A38 at South Brent.

Before emergency services arrived at the scene of the first accident, a second occurred at the same spot. The first 999 shout came at 8.40am when a red Nissan Micra collided with a Porsche 944 near the Shell garage on the northbound carriageway.

Yesterday, the driver of the Micra, from Kingsbridge, suffered minor cuts. He was taken to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital for treatment.

Events | World record tree planting attempt

A world record tree planting attempt will take place in South Brent this weekend.

The event, Tree O’Clock, is part of National Tree Week and a world record attempt will take place around the country to plant the most trees in one hour from 11am-12 midday on Saturday .

Plymouth Guild, Groundwork Devon and Cornwall and BTCV Devon and Cornwall will be bringing their volunteers together at the Moor Trees Burlands site at South Brent in an effort to plant more than 100 trees as their contribution to the record attempt.

World record breakers, Big Beat junk funk band, will also be there. The band hold the official Guinness World Record for creating the biggest junk orchestra ever and afterwards they will conduct a special drumming session with all the volunteers.

Simon De Groot, Plymouth Guild Volunteer Centre Manager, said: “As world leaders meet in Copenhagen for the Climate Summit, we will meet in a muddy field in South Brent to show that with a combination of volunteer power and music, people can plant a new woodland in the time it will take them to sign in”

Man dies in South Brent A38 accident

A man was killed in an accident on the A38 at South Brent at the weekend.

The incident happened at about 3.25am on Saturday by the South Brent junction.

Police were called to a report of a collision between a Ford Focus and a pedestrian on the Exeter-bound carriageway.

The pedestrian, believed to be a 42-year-old from Aberystwyth in Wales, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man is thought to have been with a group of others in a white van which had stopped at the nearby service station.

Events | South Brent Christmas lights celebration

On Friday 27th November at 6.00 p.m. the Christmas lights will be switched on in South Brent, ready for the winter carnival the following evening. The shops will be open, ‘Wells Jive’ will be dancing in the streets and there will be festive drinks and mince pies.

Mary Bradford, Avril Kelly and Jane Westmoreland will officially switch the lights on, having carried out fund raising for the Christmas lights throughout the year, with £1,175 raised so far. Following the trial of solar powered lights on Christmas trees last year, members of the Parish Council have worked with willing volunteers to arrange an installation of low energy LED lights throughout the centre of South Brent supplied by Torbay Display.

Events | South Brent Christmas concert

The Brent Singers are putting on a concert of sacred carols and lighter songs for Christmas. The concert, on Saturday, December 12, will take place at South Brent Village Hall with café-style seating and a complimentary glass of mulled wine.

It starts at 7.30pm. Tickets, £5, at the door. Proceeds will go to the Soldiers, Sailors and Airforce Families Association.
